My Professional Background
A little more detail about me
I am a mother of four beautiful children. I have been through divorce and married again. I currently live with my husband, Tom (he's also a counsellor), near the lovely city of Cork, in the south of Ireland.
I started my career as a nurse and then specialised in psychiatric nursing. My professional experience and my personal circumstances led me to counselling, as a way of understanding myself and my patients. I soon caught the bug, and studied psychotherapy for four years at University College Cork, graduating in 1997. However, I realised that the journey to becoming one's true self is a lifelong one and mine continues every day.
Like Freud, and every other counsellor I know, I soon discovered that childhood experiences (and particularly formative experiences around sexuality) can influence the pathways we take in life, in so very many ways. I began to work with survivors of rape and sexual abuse for two state-funded agencies here in Ireland. I also maintained a private practice, where I worked with clients dealing with a wide variety of probelms - the vicissitudes of life.
In recent years, I have had to learn to cope with chronic pain. That has been a journey in itself - indeed, an ongoing one! This is why I work, now, exclusively on Zoom.
I hope I convey to you that, though I have done many courses and am professionally certifed by the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, I am here also as someone who copes with the everyday demands of human life. I would love to help you do the same.
